WEST OF ROME PUBLIC ART ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST BENEFIT
A NIGHT OF GROWTH AND DISCOVERY JULY 26, 2010
CURATED AND ORCHESTRATED BY ARTISTS MIKE KELLEY AND MICHAEL SMITH AND WEST OF ROME PUBLIC ART
West of Rome Public Art held its very first benefit on July 26 in conjunction with the collaborative project by Mike Kelley and Michael Smith, A Voyage of Growth and Discovery. Taking place in the exhibition space, the benefit was a transformative experience of psycho-aesthetic immersion with the artists directly involved in the creation of this mind-blowing voyage. The benefit featured performances, unexpected and unconventional events, and an unusual conjunction of surprises and enlightening moments. Artists’ curated participatory environments and performances included the “special recipe” performed by Baby Ikki with a live score by Mike Kelley, a “furry” performative environment by Marnie Weber, and a musical performance by Jim Shaw, among other surprises. The menu was specially conceived and prepared by Suzanne Goin of Lucques.
BENEFIT THAT BENFITS YOU — SUPPORTING PUBLIC ART IN LOS ANGELES
Following West of Rome’s established commitment to using flexible and open-minded approaches and to working in unorthodox sites in direct collaboration with artists, this extravaganza reinvented the prevailing image of the art benefit by creating a once-in-a-lifetime participatory environment with artistic and musical performances.
A Night of Growth and Discovery marks the first year of West of Rome Public Art achieving its 501(c)(3) non-profit status and celebrates the on-going Women in the City series with the forthcoming projects Plywood Curtain by Jennifer Bolande and Eternity Forever by Marnie Weber.
