WEST OF ROME PUBLIC ART PRESENTS
MARNIE WEBER’S ETERNITY FOREVER
A NEW PUBLIC ART PROJECT
THE MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY AND MAUSOLEUM
Eternity Forever continued West of Rome Public Art’s mission to support public art projects in unusual or under-recognized locations in the Los Angeles region that engage the public in experiences unique to the city. Sited at the Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum, which is located in Altadena, where Weber, among many other artists, lives and works, offering a unique context to present her work. Weber is an artist and musician, known for her imaginative multimedia exhibitions, performances, films and music videos that immerse the viewer into an ethereal world of the uncanny and grotesque. By combining her own mythology of creatures, animals and female characters with costuming and stage sets, Weber infuses dream-like narratives— seemingly unfixed in time—with a sense of the familiar.
Weber’s new film, The Eternal Heart, adopts the expressionistic aesthetic of early black and white silent movies. The pure and innocent Gothic heroine, played by Weber, is depicted in a mystical landscape populated with a menagerie of grotesque characters. Weber is one of the few female artists to explore the concept of “horror” in her work.
Eternity Forever marked the last appearance of The Spirit Girls, who have now departed their earthly bodies. Moving on, in December 2010, as a continuation of her musical projects, Weber debuted her new noise band, Fäuxmish, demonstrating “simplicity through noise.”
Although Mountain View’s grounds and Mausoleum have been used as a location for films and television shows, there are few visitors and the building is often deserted. As time passes, one wonders if beauty will be enough to sustain the upkeep of the building and grounds. By using the Mausoleum for this project, West of Rome Public Art and Marnie Weber hope to revitalize the site for future projects and gallery exhibitions by other artists.
